Greetings,
As summer quickly approaches and we prepare for our Elder/Youth Conference, we have a few updates to share with you.
First, we'd like to acknowledge our gratitude to the organizers of the
Peak Naming Ceremony that took place this past week.? The peak outside
east of Ashland, formally known as "Squaw Peak," is now officially
Taowhywee Peak, in honor of our Grandma Aggie's family.? Some of us in
R.E.D. were able to be present to witness and offer our
prayers/blessings for the Naming Ceremony.? As some of you may know,
R.E.D. felt apprehensive about our participation in this event some
weeks ago and took a position of neutrality until all the local,
regional tribes were invited to be present also.? Once these
iinvitations were made, we felt we could step up and attend.? It
entailed a lot of work and patience--especially on the part of the land
stewards and the organizers--but we worked TOGETHER to make it happen
and the rewards have been beautiful.? To honor the land and the
ancestors was a blessing for all of us.? To those of you who worked
with us in this endeavor, we thank you from our hearts.
Next thing we want to make sure you know about is that we'll be holding
our annual Elder/Youth Conference in a few weeks.? PLEASE send this out
to your lists, friends, relatives and other interested people. . .
Red Earth Descendants presents. . .
ELDER/YOUTH CONFERENCE and World Peace and
Prayer Day:? June 21, 22, 23, 24 at EarthTeach Forest Park
10024 Dead Indian Memorial Road, Ashland. OR (9 mile marker).
Event
sponsored by R.E.D., EarthTeach Forest Park, Siwash Native Resources,
Klamath Tribes, Lomakatsi Restoration Project and more to come.
This is a free event and we will not tolerate the use of drugs or alcohol.
Camping will be available, as well as coming together to form a
community kitchen.? Bring kitchen equipment and what you can for
self-sustaining food supplies and we'll create a community kitchen.
With
respect and in accordance to the vision of Arvol Looking Horse, the Red
Earth Descendants invites the youth, elders and their families to the
second annual Elder/Youth Conference and World Peace and Prayer Day
Gathering.? In the ways of Native traditions, we gather and ask our
elders to lead, teach us and to help us remember the timeless
traditions that once held all nations together.? We come together in
peace and in a respectful way for learning, for spiritual cleansing and
for prayer.? From our hearts, we respect those who came before us, we
call on the keepers of our traditions and we honor the generations to
come.? We invite you to join us for 4 days of tribal living.? In the
traditions of the circle of life, we return back to the ways of our
Mother Earth and prepare ourselves spiritually for the changing times.
Our informal schedule will include, but not be limited to:
Survival skills, herbs, shelter making, fire skills, tracking,
weaponry, stalking, hunting, storytelling, living respectfully with our
Mother Earth, singing and sharing with our relations, learning to live
with other cultures and respecting their ways. . .and LISTENING to our
elders and the wisdom they carry.
World
Peace and Prayer Day is on the Summer Solstice, June 21.? This will be
the start of our conference.? We will host a Ceremony to honor Arvol
Looking Horse's vision on this day.? The general public is invited to
attend this Ceremony and a village meeting that afternoon.? The rest of
the conference is focused on the children and their teachings from the
elders.? Camp is open to people who will share and participate in this
focus.
